New Delhi: Precautionary steps are being taken across the world against the likely Covid storm in light of the rise in corona cases in China. People with underlying medical conditions including diabetes, heart problems, hypertension, respiratory diseases, kidney problems, etc. are even more at risk of contracting Covid and hence the reissued Covid notification has raised concerns.
Numerous studies have shown that people with diabetes who contract the coronavirus are more likely to have severe pneumonia and inflammation, hospitalization, need for ventilator support, and death. Because of their weakened immune system, people with diabetes are more susceptible to serious complications from internal infections, especially if the virus is contagious.
Be prepared for an unexpected pandemic crisis if you have diabetes or have a family member diagnosed with diabetes of any kind. Below is what you can do to protect your family and yourself:
» Follow the standard protocol and guidelines issued by the Government of India regarding symptoms, hygiene practices, hand washing with soap or hand disinfection etc.
» Avoid going out as much as possible, and if not, observe proper social distancing.
» Take your medicines regularly and do not skip them. Make sure you have an adequate supply of diabetes medication. Always have your medications with you to treat hypoglycemia or any other diabetes condition.
» Check your blood sugar regularly to make sure you are in a good control range.
» Make sure you carry or have extra supplies of insulin in case the restriction returns.
» Do not hoard medicines and supplies out of panic as the government will ensure uninterrupted supply of medicines and drugs.
» Do not self-medicate. Always consult your doctor before using any medication.
Watch for signs of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) or diabetic ketoacidosis. This condition can potentially develop life-threatening complications in people with diabetes, most commonly in those with type 1 diabetes. It can occur when the body lacks enough insulin to convert glucose into energy, causing fat to break down and leading to a build-up of acids called ketones in the blood.
During the pandemic, people with diabetes must consider maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following a routine as essential. Do not skip physical activities and start exercising at home. Make sure you are eating a nutritious diet. Avoid fried foods as they can derail your diabetes.
Stay in touch with your doctor. If your blood sugar fluctuates frequently, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. It is risky to manage diabetes in the midst of Covid concerns because it requires constant attention. You can help yourself and your family as soon as possible by staying informed.
