And the Class of 2023 prom king and queen goes to… Golden Globes host Jerrod Carmichael and guest in Gucci Julia Garner! We’re kidding. But the first awards ceremony of the 2023 season had a certain Midwestern dancehall feel. We were a long way from Tinseltown, Toto.

Some pulled tropes of high school style with A-level results. For example, Eddie Redmayne looked more fashionable than formal at the end of the year in his chocolate brown satin-trimmed Valentino suit, complete with a bulbous bodice emerging from his lapel. With a sheer neckline instead of a shirt and flowing trouser hems, Redmayne was top of the class when it came to suppressing the fizz and fantasy of a prom night.
Sigourney Weaver also looked achingly chic in a draped black Saint Laurent dress cinched with an inky bosom. Top marks to the 73-year-old for watching FashionA modern guide to bodices approved by Carrie Bradshaw rather than Gok Wan.
Then came a quivering wave of marshmallow color, from Seth Rogen’s sweet Dior men’s suit with a pastel pink bow tie and cumberbund to Elizabeth Debicki’s Barbie-dream Dior dress with a sweet bow attached to the straps (obvs!) of the bodice and Garner’s sequin-studded Gucci ruffles that echoed the youthful recklessness of the ball.
Opera gloves – level of sophistication at 16 – were present and correct, thanks Bear Actor Ayo Edebiri’s light blue Rosie Assoulin confection featuring a crop top (bonus points!) and color-contrasting yellow gloves and Britt Lower’s low-cut Bach Mai ball gown paired with leather elbows. While we expected the old Hollywood evening gown trend to die out after a few years of operatic elegance, the hard-working accessory lived on outside of a Beverley Hilton-lined limousine.
Peplums (check out Michelle Yeoh’s midnight blue sequin Armani Privé), ’50s silhouettes (Hannah Einbinder played it cute in Carolina Herrera), and costume jewelry (hello Rihanna in Cartier) also graced the playful red carpet, suggesting that Hollywood has either mid-life crisis or just feeling very nostalgic. The 2023 Golden Globes have always been quirky, with their controversial past, but the red carpet welcomed an eclectic mix of individuals who found their fashion background — rather, one might say, like high school itself.
