Royal women know many tricks to look their best before a public engagement because of the fashion rules and regulations they have to follow. Although it is unclear how strict these rules are, it is well documented that royal women are advised to avoid skirts and dresses shorter than the knee.
Kate, Princess of Wales, often followed this rule, but there were times when she accidentally broke it. This led to the late queen giving her advice on how to avoid re-offending – no less clever advice.
The princess broke this rule pointlessly at outdoor public events when a gust of wind blew her skirt and exposed her to a Marilyn Monroe moment.
One example of this was in 2016 when Kate and Prince William visited New Delhi, India.
During a wreath-laying service at India Gate in the capital in April 2106, a gust of wind blew Kate’s dress off.
The Duchess wore a cream Emilia Wickstead dress with a flowy skirt.
Another instance was in 2011 when Kate wore a yellow Jenny Packham dress during her and William’s tour of Canada. The dress was quite short, but it was cut short by a gust of wind that blew it up to reveal Kate’s thighs.

Although this has seemingly prevented wardrobe malfunctions over the years, the fashion protocols royals must follow are constantly changing and updating, according to royal experts.
In an interview with Insider, royal fashion expert and author of HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style Elizabeth Holmes noted that many royal fashion rules are “myths”.
She said: “We expect how they look, saying they have to be stylish but sensible, ornate but understated. It’s a very fine line that they walk.”
In her book, the author went on to say that while there are some royal style protocols, most of them are not true and are just part of a “broader cultural insistence on sophisticated modesty, an expectation to be put together and presentable at all times.” “.
Elizabeth added that the royal family has many stylists who would never allow them to intentionally break a written fashion rule. Their job is also to prevent any fashion faux pas.
She said, “These women [female royals] they are very famous but they are not free agency celebrities. They cannot do or say what they want. They work on behalf of the family and the crown.”
