Here at the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, every year from December 14th to January 5th, the staff participates in several Christmas Bird Counts throughout the state of Texas. Counts are a way to determine the numbers of wintering populations of different species in a particular area. They take place nationwide and have expanded to include several other countries. Data collected from these counts help biologists and wildlife managers determine what conservation efforts are needed to protect the habitats of wintering and resident bird species.
This year I attended San Bernard CBC, Freeport CBC and Brazoria CBC. It was during the CBC in San Bernardo that our Education Intern Adam Trujillo and I encountered a somewhat elusive species, the Sedge Warbler.
