Nightwing Invents Iconic Batman Franchise Weapon (Not Bruce)

Batman may have some of the coolest gadgets around, but one moment reveals how Nightwing contributed a classic weapon to the Dark Knight’s arsenal.

There are many cool toys Batman used to help his war on crime, but one was actually created by his old ally, Nightwing. A look back at Dick Grayson’s early days shows how he was responsible for the most shocking weapon in the Bat-Family’s arsenal.

Unlike many other heroes in the DC universe, Bruce Wayne did not become a hero by being born with powers or by encountering a mysterious phenomenon. He I did, however, has the drive to train himself to peak physical condition as well as the finances to start a war on crime. To aid his mission, Batman creates gadgets that will allow him to take his crime-fighting to the next level. From the contents of his utility belt to spectacular and high-tech vehicles like the Batmobile, Bruce was able to develop many tools that gave him an edge in fighting the evil forces that threatened Gotham.

However, there is one iconic weapon that Batman and his agents tend to use, which Bruce amazingly did no I create. in Nightwing #101 by Chuck Dixon, Scott Beatty, and Scott McDaniel, readers get an in-depth look at Dick Grayson’s final days as Robin to his earliest appearances as Nightwing. Batman is fighting Clayface when Robin joins in, having just finished another superhero business. Tensions between the Dynamic Duo are high due to Dick’s efforts to split his time between Teen Titans and his usual Boy Wonder duties. As the two argue, Clayface manages to slip the heroes. Dick follows a trail into the sewers where he finds Clayface recovering. Robin pulls out a weapon he recently developed with Cyborg that is sure to defeat the shapeshifter: an electric Batarang that Dick gleefully calls “electrorank“.

It should come as no surprise that the electric Batarang was Dick’s idea. Nightwing’s eskrima sticks aren’t just for beating up baddies. They are often capable of delivering high-voltage shocks that can take down enemies the size of Killer Croc. Nightwing’s tendency to focus on electricity-based weapons carried over into video games as Arkham series as well as other miniseries such as Future country. Knowing that Nightwing created the Electric Batarang sheds light on why this seems to be a consistent theme for his weapon.

Power tools seem pointless to a vigilante team. They are less lethal and can help take down bigger, more intimidating villains. But according to Dick himself, this is one of the few gadgets that Batman never added to his collection. However, Bruce apparently liked the idea enough to make it a permanent part of his arsenal, something Nightwing no doubt picked up on. Making the electric Batarang a standard weapon confirmed Dick’s ingenuity, and this success probably inspired the way he made his future armaments. Thanks to Nightwing idea, he didn’t just get a pair of great sticks, Batman received one of the most iconic weapons in his entire arsenal.
