WEST HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Lisa Marie Presley — Elvis Presley’s only child — died Thursday after being hospitalized earlier in the day, her mother said in a statement. The singer was 54 years old.
“It is with a heavy heart that I have to share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us,” Priscilla Presley said Thursday night. “She was the most passionate, strongest and kindest woman I have ever known.
The announcement came just hours after Priscilla Presley confirmed that Lisa Marie Presley had been taken to hospital on Thursday.
According to Craig Little, a spokesman for the county fire department, Los Angeles County paramedics were dispatched to a home in Calabasas at 10:37 a.m. on a report of a woman in full cardiac arrest. Property records indicate that Presley resided at this address.
Paramedics arrived about six minutes later, Little said. A subsequent statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said paramedics performed CPR and “found the patient to have signs of life” before immediately taking her to nearby West Hills Hospital.
The city of Calabasas lies between the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Santa Susanna Mountains, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.
News of Presley’s hospitalization was first reported by TMZ and later confirmed by People magazine.
Presley, 54, attended the Golden Globes on Tuesday to celebrate Austin Butler’s award for playing her father in Elvis. She called his performance “stunning” during a red carpet interview for “Entertainment Tonight.”
“I really didn’t know what to do when I saw it,” she told ET of the Baz Luhrmann film. “I had to process it for about five days because it was so incredible and so spot on and so authentic that, yeah, I can’t even describe what it meant.
Just days earlier, she had been in Memphis, Tennessee at Graceland — the mansion where Elvis lived — to celebrate the anniversary of her father’s birth on January 8.
Presley recently wrote an essay published in People about the “horrible reality” of her grief following the suicide of her son Benjamin Keough in 2020. Presley is also the mother of actor Riley Keough and twin daughters.
“I have dealt with death, grief and loss since I was 9 years old. I’ve had more in my life than anyone else and somehow I’ve made it this far,” she wrote in August.
