With winter temperatures not dropping, many meteorologists are predicting the winter of 2022 to be one of the warmest on record. The specter of climate change and global warming looms large, and nations are faced with the dilemma of environmental development and use. It is increasingly evident that the development process mapped out by nations around the world is no longer sustainable. Although the ideas of sustainable development have been formulated and promoted for decades, practical translations still lag. But leaving the burden of responsibility to the governments of the world is a farce. Collective guilt must be shared by the population. And for this, the fashion industry has introduced the concept of sustainable fashion. Sustainable fashion (also known as eco-fashion) refers to products, practices, activities and stakeholders (policymakers, businesses and consumers) that strive for a carbon-neutral fashion sector based on equality, social justice, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. . The Earth Logic Fashion Research Action Plan advocates “prioritizing the health and survival of our planet Earth, and consequently the future safety and health of all species, including humans, over industry, commerce and economic growth”. Earth Logic’s proposal explicitly links the global fashion industry and the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on 1.5°C global warming to support its claim.
But why sustainable fashion? According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions, which is more than all international flights and shipping combined. In a similar vein, Earth Pledge, a non-profit organization committed to promoting and supporting sustainable development, states: “At least 8,000 chemicals are used to convert raw materials into textiles, and 25% of the world’s pesticides are used to grow non-organic cotton. . This causes irreversible damage to people and the environment, and still two-thirds of a garment’s carbon footprint is created after it is purchased.” According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the fast fashion industry undermines sustainability efforts by producing 20% of the world’s wastewater. Fast fashion also contributes to around 10% of global gas emissions. Thus, the idea of sustainable fashion needs to gain traction, acceptance and implementation on a global scale for the fashion industry, which contributes to the environmental degradation affecting the human race.
The concept of sustainable fashion includes several undercurrents: in addition to concern for the environment, sustainable fashion includes in its circle the ideas of ethical employment, promotion of local products, prolonging the life cycle of materials and products, etc. Shameful working conditions of workers, employment of child labor, promotion of one-dimensional concepts of beauty and figure , these are all problems that sustainable fashion is trying to fix. Thus, sustainable fashion is not limited to environmental issues and encompasses a wide range of issues that plague the fashion industry. The idea of sustainable fashion has gained a lot of traction at the turn of the millennium, as several fashion brands and labels try to address the issues raised by the idea.
To this end, we intend to maintain our commitment to a more sustainable future and design ways to incorporate sustainability into our business. To this end, we select fabrics for our Timeless collection from environmentally friendly sources while maintaining the highest level of excellent quality. Each piece is made from our fabric, which is a fashionable blend of Chanderi silk, cotton and Georgette. To promote sustainability, the tar that is produced is later outsourced to other industries, resulting in minimal fabric waste. Our collection is called Timeless for two reasons: firstly, because we believe that the styles we create will be fashionable even as fashion trends come and go, and secondly, because the entire collection is durable and designed to last .
Several steps have been taken to inculcate a culture of sustainability and ensure the guilt of the fashion industry. In July 2012, the Sustainable Garment Coalition launched the Higg Index, a self-assessment criterion that aims to measure and promote sustainable supply chains in the textile and footwear industry. The world’s largest fashion sustainability summit took place on 3 May 2012 in Copenhagen, bringing together over 1,000 key industry stakeholders to discuss the importance of sustainable fashion business. Since then, the Copenhagen Fashion Summit has brought together hundreds of people from the fashion business in an effort to spark a movement within the industry. Sustainable fashion still has a long way to go; yet it is imperative that we take this path.
