5 Best Werewolf Movies and TV Shows to Watch Only on a Full Moon
It’s a full moon tonight! Werewolves have completely taken over mainstream Halloween media over the past few decades, with the growing popularity of Dusk film series and Teen Wolf television show. While werewolves have been a typical part of folklore and culture since their inception in Europe during the medieval era.
There is no doubt that werewolves are and always will be a fan favorite among the public. These people, who appear in their wolf-like form only during the full moon, have become a staple of Halloween. Now that the Halloween season is back again for another spooky year, there are a few movies featuring these big bad creatures that are worth watching.
The Twilight Saga (2008-2012)
The Twilight Saga is the ultimate battle between werewolves and vampires as a vampire named Edward and a werewolf named Jacob fight over a human girl named Bella. Although the werewolves don’t fully enter the universe until the second film, once they are there, it’s definitely a must watch. Jacob played by Taylor Lautner, protects Bella from a horde of vampires along with the rest of his pack. This epic gothic drama film series is a push and pull between a cut vampire husband and a free-living werewolf boyfriend.
Except instead of happy romantic moments, there are some pretty brutal fights between vampires and werewolves. The films are based on the book series of the name. So movie fans who want more can check out the star-studded novels (and vice versa).
“Teen Wolf” (2011-2017)
Teen Wolf is a supernatural teen drama that aired on MTV from 2011 to 2017. The series was extremely popular with younger audiences for its dramatic content that surrounded high school life (with a hint of werewolf magic). The series follows a high school student named Scott McCall (Tyler Posey), who becomes a teenage werewolf after being bitten by an alpha werewolf the night before his sophomore year.
He is forced to balance his identity in his hometown, which he also realizes is a breeding ground for supernatural phenomena. Romantic feelings, weak-to-jock character arcs due to new werewolf powers, and family drama follow suit in the series as the story progresses. They also star in the series Dylan O’Brien and Holland Roden.
ZOMBIES 2 (2020)
This is for the family! ZOMBIES 2 is the music-filled sequel to the Disney Channel Original Movie ZOMBIES. The first film followed Zed (Milo Mannheim) and a group of zombies as they try to assimilate into a human high school. Newfound love is all the more relevant, and when Zedd and Addison (Meg Donnelly) fall in love.
In the sequel, their relationship is challenged when a pack of werewolves infiltrates the city in search of the Great Alpha. The werewolves are led by Wyatt (Piers Joza) and Winter (Ariel Martinalso known as Baby Ariel). For any Disney Channel fan, this movie franchise is a great choice. Werewolves are also present in the latest sequel ZOMBIES continuation.
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
American Werewolf In London is a 1981 horror-comedy that is known as one of the most famous and revered werewolf films ever to exist in American cinema. The film follows two American backpackers named David and Jack who are attacked by a werewolf while traveling in England.
David then spirals, asking if he will transform into a werewolf at the next full moon (as legend has it). The movie is worth watching for its classic movie feel, comedic dialogue and of course, werewolf content.
Werewolves Within (2021)
Werewolves on the inside is a newer horror comedy film based on the video game of the same name. The movie is released in 2021 and stars Sam Richardson, Milana Weintrub, George Vasiliy, Sarah Burns, and many others. The film follows a group of people in a small town in Vermont who are caught in a snowstorm and everyone expects that one of them is secretly a werewolf.
The film is definitely on the funnier side and the film received mostly positive reviews for its well-written script, characters and jokes. The film became the first film based on a video game to receive a “Certified Fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes. A fun, mysterious, new werewolf horror comedy? The fur for sure!
